It is called the Velvet Mesquite (Prosopis velutina). It is a very common tree where I live. Hope that helps.

Just to give you a better idea of what the wood looks like, I made all of the following knife handles from it. It can vary quite a bit in color. I really like using this wood. We also use it almost exclusively in our wood stove to heat our house during the winter.
