OK, so now i've managed to sort out photo hosting, it's time to continue my pursuit of 'budget bushcraft knives'.
The next stage took me to custom knife makers. I looked at some awsome knives from many different makers. All very impressive and i will not say they are overpriced but they were way out of my price range. The other thing i found was that i wanted a hand in finishing the tool myself. It had to fill the following criteria,
1. 01 tool steel
2. 3mm stock
3. 90mm blade
4. scandi grind
5. be within an ever decreasing budget!
6. be finished to a high quality
After a lot of soul searching, i decided upon SWC knives. Steve offered a knife making kit but was happy to make the blade to my spec's. I already had all the handle making equipment so i saved money on that as Steve agreed to omit these.
Four weeks later, Mr Postie brought a shiny package from SWC and i went to work putting wood to steel, so to speak.
I decided (after messing up my natural canvas micarta scales) on a nice piece of spalted beech and mounted them with brick red and anthracite liners using brass loveless bolts.
This being my first full tang project (and the fact that i messed up the micarta) i CAREFULLY sculpted the scales to similar dimensions to other bushy's i've seen on this site.
The cost of the project was inflated as i requested an RM style sheath to be made to fit this blade by SWC and i asked for a my 'Wolf Paw' design to be engraved on the blade (hence 'Lupo'). After working the scales i then used boiled linseed, wire wool and micromesh abrasives to finish and here is the result.
I know some may say 'It's a clone', some may say 'he only fitted the scales' but, as far as i'm concerned, i've talked the talk, now i am showing i can walk the walk.
We have to start somewhere and i started by following the tutorials on this site. So, again, a big thankyou for all the tip's and advice you benevolent people dish out, it really is appreciated.:You_Rock_
Thanks to Steve at SWC for the awesome blade, Englishrose for the scales and liners, Mick Wardell for the Loveless bolts and the (trashed) micarta .
The next project is in the workshop, a Mick Spain Blade baying for my attention and this time i'm making my own sheath.
Oh yes, i'm apologies Jojo, it is different to your's and at least you made your blade!
