Pot efficiency things....

Hey all.
Im being very particular in my next cook set and no where sells exactly what I want so I will make it myself.

What I really need is to find somewhere that sells the burner efficiency rings like on the bottom of the flashboil.

My idea.......a Alocs alcohol stove set with nesting pots. But to help aid heating i want one of the rings on the bottom of the larger pot that I will use for water only.
I know they sell pots already with them but I then have to buy a new set of pits as well as the burner set........

Any help is greatly appreciated

You could try a heatsink from a pc cpu cooler.

This type of pot really do work well, I've a couple of Chinese pots and some branded Primus and they make a massive difference in boil times/fuel usage. Unless your skilled in welding aluminium/stainless steel and can source the heat exchange rings at the right price you'd be better off buying 'off the shelf' ?

I'd like a pot of this type around the 4l mark, if you have the skills and get the heat exchange rings let me know :)

as I've said before a wide pan (8 inches +) virtually illiminates the heat exchanger, I manage 13g gas per litre boil in the summer and 18 in sub zero conditions just by using a wide pan. Admittedley its not the 8 grams jetboil claim, but jetboil take 20g in subzero conditions, that is burning isobutane through the jetboil sol with its onboard regulator, using liquid water at 0¤c. The only one is the msr reactor, and that is done with a wide infra red burner that alters the charicteristics of burning gas. Most stoves have a problem with exaust gasses pushing the heat from the stove, which is why the fins are 2/3 of an inch to catch the hot gas, but the Infra red burner is different.
Other things you can try is pot insulation. There are threads on speruit burna that show the effectiveness of just placing an oversize pot over your cooking pot to insulate the sides and lid, increases efficiency by quite a bit. I insulated my pot walls with a soldering mat, and insulated the lid with a further plastic cover. Even though people tell you to always cover your pot, in the summer I got better efficiency without a lid, as it must act as a radiator . Also milled bases are less efficient. I'd definatley recommend a wider pot with an alcohol stove as the flame and fuel used is so much larger than gas.

Sounds like your talking about a Nansen setup, love to see the details on that.

Sort of thing.

You'll hit Jetboil performance with these Chinese pans :) On stove of choice :)

Yup that's the one Rik, you hit jetboil performance with that I recall ?

I reccon with an alcohol flame you need all the help you can get, its not got much thrust, and its a big, cool flame, anon the physics of combustion, thermodynamics, newtons law of cooling etc.

Thanks for all the help guys.
What I wanted was to eliminate the need to buy 3 different sets as Alocs don't do the combination I want........
I want the Alocs cw set with cup amd burner etc so that is 1 purchase.
Then I want the pot with the heat exchanger. ....2nd purchase.
And then I want the smaller cup to fit inside the big one but yiu cant buy them singly you have to buy the nesting pair......so I end up with a big expense and 2x large cups I domt want or need..
Unless someone knows where to buy the burner and windshield in there own???

You hit Jetboil performance with the <£20 pot over a <£15 stove. The Nansen set was at the time remarkable. These 'new' pots will boost the performance of an alcohol stove but I'm still a fan of proper Trangia storm cookers, the windshield design does such a great job of cutting down heat loss, far better than the Swedish Army sets.

still reccommend the cannister invertion stoves, alot better efficiency when the pressure drops.

Is the trangia you use the one where you place the pot inside the windshield rather than ontop of it ? Heard about them, but I've had aluminium go as soft as plastic in the heat of fire, what I'm really after is a steel one that I can put wood in too, 'twould be my ideal stove, the big model to boot, with a heat exchange pan.
