I can't speak for the OP, but I just used loft insulation from, my loft! in mine.

30ish ml gives me a bun time of about 14/15 minutes, and boiled 500ml of cold water in a crusader cup in about 10 minutes.

Excellent little stoves, and fit the crusader cooker base as someone pointed out on an earlier thread. Must get me one. I have some strainer material in the garage as the missus found out when straining the peas yesterday :)

An alternative filler can be perlite, which can be picked up pretty cheaply at a garden centre. Perlite is a very light weight amorphous glass, but in essence looks like a very pourous gravel. I got a huge bag for £5, made about 20 stoves and not even made a dent in the bag.
