Interesting - I use a 50/50 beesax/resin mix for waxing threads when sewing leather. The threads catch a bit better than just beeswax.

You mentioned that there was a lot of pitch/sap running down the sides of the trees. Are the trees infected with Pitch Canker disease? Many of our Monterey pines in this area and white pines up on a mountain nearby are infected with this disease and because there are a few of us that are known to collect pitch to use as a spiritual medicine, firestarter or hafting material, the local biologists have asked that we not take the pitch, fearing that we would help spread the disease to other areas.
