Intersting to see some of the alternative theories for the gear being discussed here - like the presumed backpack frame might be part of a snowshoe. I'd never have thought of that. And the grass mantle may be a backpack basket or a mat - or a couple of these things together. But you have to wonder what's missing - presumably he would have some food, which his attackers made off with. And the speculation that they didn't take the axe because they wouldn't be able to explain it away or fence it... fascinating to speculate!

The sound sorts it self out four minuets in on YouTube.
The Copper axe is obviously the star of the show, but @24 inch long, Err Dr Tartaron, I think not, Anyhoo a just a slight error there me thinks. another slight inconsistency, but probably just peoples individual interpretations , Otzi's wore his belt next to the skin under his loincloth.
Some very good kit reconstructions of Otzi's kit on YouTube especially the Belt, also lots o good stuff on the quiver, knife, fire kit, and some stunning copper axe reconstructions.

Mick and myself were also talking about kit that works and stands the test of time recently, & Otzi's Molly Belt, see end of vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uINWU75GD_0

I do like the snowshoe theory idea in the lecture, but as they usually work best in pairs I think ill go with the backpack this time.

i have not watched the movie yet...

but if attackers took his food why would they not have taken the rest of his gear (arrows, bow etc.) as these items would have been of value, too.../1

Well yes, fair point. Of course all of this involves a lot of speculation about the people involved and the particular circumstances of his death. His quiver contained mostly unfinished arrows, the two finished ones being broken. So maybe they took all the good ones. As for the bow, well I don't know, having two bows might have raised questions.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it, and the missing items were there but aren't preserved - who knows? Maybe the archeologists will figure it all out, but until then it's fun to speculate.

Interestingly for Otzi fans, a theory proposed by Dr. Angelo Fossati after the discovered of a carved stone in a church near were otzi was found may even have record the events surrounding otzi's death, alternatively the stone may have recorded a sacrificial ritual similar to which otzi's was involved .
I'm trying to copy an image of the stone over.
On the left hand side of the stone "and this is subject to interpretation" appears to show a man standing under an axe similar to otzi's being shot in the back with a arrow.

Sorry the best I can do ATM http://culturewatchnorthwest.blogspot.com/2009/06/otzi-talk-fascinates-crowd-oldest.html

rain coats made from grass have been used in japan for a long time; where i'm now there is still one on display and it looks similiar to pics i saw of oetzi's grass cloak/mat ...

Funny I was just thinking of Otzi's kit when watching Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo the otherday. During the big storm scene there are a heap of folk wearing grass capes in an effort to stay dry. It does look pretty effective if woven correctly. Baskets can be woven to be waterproof is done tightly enough and the flattened cone Japanese grass hat will shed water too.

Sent via smoke-signal from a woodland in Scotland.

Otzi'i certainly had a hide coat. When Otzi was discovered I was first amused that the three large sections of grass matting was a coat, however there are some of doubts about this theory now, mainly it wouldn't have been wide enough to fit round his shoulders. It may have been part of the back pack. The pack may have had a leather bag for his equipment, so it may have been a bedroll tied to the pack, very handy for sleeping on snow, it's also possible the matted grass served a second purpose, it may have been just tied round his torso for insulation or some kind of protection.
