V-brakes need different brake levers (different cable pull). I'd stick with older style cantilevers for the time being.

The current brakes have this number after them: BR-CT90-M

Is that relivant when buying another set or will any Shimano cantilever brakes fit?

Yep they would be a good replacement for the original. Has your brake's got that round disk at the top like the one in the pictures? Just hard to see..
