Hi BOD,
I likewise came across the Maori Drill by accident several months ago. This drill used for drilling stone reciprocates much like the pump drill but is too difficult to keep steady, and so unreliable in fire starting. The simple hand twirled drill is more practical. Still, it’s always fun to test something new. BTW, our friend Ed has been vacationing in Hawaii where he received some personal training on the traditional fire plow. Hopefully he will write us on his adventure when he returns.

Fascinating, thanks Ash

To use the exhausting fire plough for fire starting when the technology for pumpdrilling is at hand! I'm glad you already tried this out Ivan, practice defeats theory.

I also love the tree felling "balista" apparatus, ingenious.

Good to hear that Ed is enjoying himself

Cheers,

Tom
