I have recently aquired 3 old kukris which were my Grandads which he bought in India during the war. Two are about 15 inches long and the third about 3 foot. There are no markings i can find other than some etched decoration on the blade. The sheaths are rotten due to age and i guess poor storage but the knives themselves are reasonably sharp. Any advice on how i should treat them and are they worth anything?

Hi - I collect old Kurkris. All non tourist Kurkris are worth keeping and looking after. Like all knives, the blades should be lightly oiled, and ideally not stored in their sheaths, however, don't throw the damaged sheaths away! If you would like to send me some photos I will try to give you a ball park figure for their worth. I will PM you my email address.

The measurements are my guess by eye - i will try and get some pics up over the next day or so with accurate measurements. Gotta say that the big one is certainly a beast.

See pics. I am obviously rubbish at sizing by eye as i have now measured largest and its only 28.5 inches long with a 23.5 inch blade. Any advice as per my OP welcome (except practicing sizing by eye :))

In the woods if possible.
Oh, "only" 28 inches! :yikes:

As others have said, protect them and don't throw anything away. Do the sheaths look like they also held a couple of smaller knives?

No idea in money terms, but if they'd been my grandfather's you'd have to prise them from my cold, dead fingers.

still... makes my ww2 kukri look like a toothpick...
its probably a tourist one or at least not designed to be functional because it has a pattern on the blade... lets see the others! :D

Strange shaped kukri? Does it fit in the sheath? The Cho (the indentation near the bolster) looks strange too, it's normally cut into the blade rather than standing out from it. I have spend quite a bit of time looking at old Kukris recently, (after I got my hands on two of them) and I haven't seen any looking like that one. It may be worth looking at one of the specialist kukri forums (IKRHS) They'd be able to help you with ID, like they did with one of mine.

but if they'd been my grandfather's you'd have to prise them from my cold, dead fingers.

Absolutely agree there!

I'd say it is a tourist one too from the pattern on the blade. I have something like it which I picked up in the flea market in Brum back in the 70's.
