Oh Wow what a thrill,
Some things have come together today.
Last summer I found a piece of spring steel that was shed by a bit of farm machinery.
Last week my work was going to throw away an anvil.
Today, I cut some of the steel, heated it to cherry red in the range in my kitchen and started bashing it about on my newly cleaned up anvil.
I'm trying to include a photo of the piece of donor steel, the range it was heated in, and the resulting two blades that came from it.

I know that they are a little too rough and ready, but they've taken an edge and I've wearing a grin the size of a very big grin ;)

Oh, and yes, that is a massive mug of tea.

PS the photo makes the range look a lot dirtier than it really is

Thanks for the comments guys,

Before finding the anvil, I was thinking of using the head of a large sledge-hammer as a surface to beat against. Don't loose heart g4ghb

Bloodline, Not sure about handles, I'll probably leave them bare until I get good enough to make either a full-tang or a stick - not something in-between.

Tony - this site just gets better and better.

Cheers

An extra spoonful of tea looks in order or at least less milk! Nice work though

Cheers!

Thanks again guys,
It's really not that hard to get the steel to move around. What does become quickly aparent is that controlling where it moves to, is another question!

You said it all then.
Spring steels are quite easy under the hammer, tool steels are another matter.
Keep us posted on the blades progress and don’t let your missus see you quenching them in the chip pan :)
