I do find this adoption of applied commercial principles interesting.

Lots of people with this level of quasi/political ethics seem to walk around in Nike trainers holding their I-phones without a single concerning thought to those purchases.

Just saying , not intending to start a war/debate. Bit of parity...
In defence am not one of tho

In my defence. I am not one of those people, I do not wear labels, As hard as it is I try to make things, buy second hand, grow stuff, forage, live spiritually and ethically and as far from corporations as is humanly possible. I have studied them in detail and whilst it is impossible to be 100% free of the parasites I do ok. I despise them so when I say I will not be be giving Musk a penny. Believe me. I have boycotted so many of them that I find it hard to buy anything these days. All I said was I will check the links so NOT GUILTY? xxxxx

Yep.

Boycott this, boycott that, but as long as it is not inconvenient.

It's hard to avoid putting money in the pocket of Winnie the Pooh, but I try...
I do that and for all the right reasons and my life could be some much easier. I have no idea how much time I spend deciding on what I should buy and from who. I think before we jump to conclusions, There are people who selectively boycott but since it was my comment I have to assume that any comments are aimed at me. Anyway I just wanted some advice and ended up being sniped at.

Off grid here. ... try and find a way to be able to use a normal contract with minutes/texts included, ironically it works out cheaper. I'm paying £12 a month for unlimited data/texts/calls ...
This thread has been an eye-opener to me. I haven't looked at any of this stuff in years, and it looks like I'm paying twice what others are paying and yet I'm getting a much worse service.

Getting a bit away from the topic, does anyone here have a contract which includes a static IPv4 IP address? I need that for my servers (mail, web, DNS).

I was looking into changing ISP recently and Zen came up top of my list for when I move. All UK based customer service and static IP address free as standard.

I have a family member who also runs a web server on Zen and he rates them.

It's a good point.

I use Starlink. I don't particularly like Musk- but actually, it's the team of skilled engineers and others in the company who make this work- not him. I also use Microsoft for work, and use Google. My phone is Android. My phone and screens were all made in China- although my computer was built in UK with components sourced from all over the place. The internet servers I use to read this forum will be all over the world (an inherent characteristic of the internet), and certainly use components from a range of sources, and use rare earth minerals most likely mined in poor conditions. As do the wind turbines and PV arrays which provide a level of grid power........ and similarly, cell phone masts are full of electronics. Most chips come from a handful of "fabs" in the world. Most assembly is done in China.

If you use the Intenet or a smartphone, you will be putting money into the pockets of regimes and people you mightn't like if you knew much about them at all.

We can minimise this by using less- cheap clothes are from an equally concerning supply chain- and as for cotton fibre......... but the way that society is structured, it's extremely difficult to live without internet access, with more and more govt and health things being on-line. Old fashioned BT lines are being swept away, so even a basic phone line will soon rely on a modem and box of chips.....

It's not clear cut. I figure that Musk is no worse than those in charge of the rest of the places that make stuff we use, and perhaps somewhat better in some respects.

I just finished a book about Jack Welch recently, it was a really interesting read- an insight into the sort of folks at top-levels of pretty much all multinational corporations.

And, unless you take control and are hands-on with any pension portfolio, your pension will have money in nearly all those big corporations.

These companies that everyone claims to abhor employ millions of people all around the world and are constantly investing in research that results in products that we rely on either directly or by buying from smaller organisations that use them.
