Obtaining an archery permission?

Today a fancy took me to do a little target shooting. I have a fairly cheap (but loads of fun) pistol crossbow I keep at my dad's house. I've not touched it in months. He has a largish garden, but in practice about 7.5 yards is the farthest you can shoot in a straight line in it. It is still larger than my garden which is why I keep it there.

Today I was shooting at about 5 yards and as you can see my aim ain't great ;). The last 4 shots were all in the yellow so I think I'd got my eye back in by then.

I really could do with more space. Even with my muckle backstop backed by the garden shed and a granite wall, I'm also loath to shoot when there are other properties adjacent if it could be avoided.

Does anyone have any experience of finding a permission for archery? Truthfully I wouldn't even know where to begin. I've been told a lot of archery clubs are quite hostile to crossbows because they chew up the backstops.

Any advice appreciated.
