Nominal Bimble in Rural Java

BOD

Bushcrafter (boy, I've got a lot to say!)
That’s what they said ‘suitable for 4 years and above’.

Just the thing for dad (me) with a dodgy stack of slipped discs and a chance to see how I go on a longer walk with my 8 year old.

So we turned up with a few others who did not have a car.

The walk was in the lower slopes of the Pangrango volcano in an area popular with day trippers and others wanting to get to the cooler air of the hills.

Despite the nomenclature, I still made sure I had enough water, shelter if it bucketed down and jungle boots.

A good thing as the walk soon turned tricky. First hazard was a flight of stairs down to a valley which was as slippery as soap.

The ridges around a volcano all radiated out like spokes and the valleys are steep due to the erosion. I took a tumble and so did my boy. Once the stairs ran out it was muddy trails some at 45 deg.

The mud is liquefied like chocolate and I could hear others tumbling too. It was difficult to keep to the sides due to the slope and vegetation so mud was the way to go.

A bamboo pole or two or, if you were lucky, three were the bridges then a steep ascent. Even more casualties. I was helping a big guy, new to Asia and mud. His Nikes were useless and he kept on falling sometimes in my direction which alarmed me as I could not really help some with my dodgy back. Thank god for jungle boots.

We soon got into some nice conifer forests on the ridge crests

We had good views of the volcano complex

We walked though paddy fields fish ponds and villages, the classic Javanese postcard theme – padi fields and volcanoes.

All in all a good day out.
