Nice canoeing places in Sweden?

Hi there!

I'm now in Sweden. I just paddled down the Klaralven river and decided that it's a bit too busy for me. It's great for camping with friends, but not for canoeing on your own, enjoying the quietness and stuff like that. (woodsaws and roads over here)

So I'm now looking for some nice places to canoe, make camp(fire) and 'being on my own' for a while.
The Sweden episode of mr. Mears really gives a view of what I'm looking for: 'hearing a woodpecker a mile away', without all the other manmade sounds. Not that I'm looking for a totally deserted area, I'm going from now with public transport I hitchhiked my way to here from the Netherlands. It did go quite good, except for the last parts (less populated).

I would really appreciate it if you know some places like that and would post some details about it. (websites/canoe rentals,..)

I was out there last year and used the company below. They speak excellent english, and have a range of wilderness trips available.

They are based in Torsby, Varmland which is in SW Sweden near the Norwegian border. If your using public transport their easy to get too - theres a bus stop right outside their offices.

They are a lot further north and so harder to get to by public transport. I've not used them, but I have been in touch with them about a possible trip next year and they seem to know what their doing.

Hi

I used these guys last year and they were in a very good location, we went just outside of their tourist season and hardly saw anyone else (except for Jed from Tru North Tarps!)

Birtle can take you anywhere you want to go really, we started from ed and worked are way up and back down the lake. You can get a train to Ed fairly easily then it is a short walk form the train staion to the lake.

We'll be canoeing in late august/beginning of september in the Glaskogen nature reserve, booked via www.arvikacanoe.se , that might help you underway.

It's a week's trip with 2 possible "rural shops" to restock supplies.

I was at Arvika Kanot Center a couple of weeks ago and found them well kitted out, friendly and very helpful. Arvika town has good shopping for supplies, an ICA and a COOP supermarkets so you can pile it all in the canoe at the start. Milk seems harder to come by for some reason in more out of the way areas.
