The World Health Organisation report on water borne protozoa, and the effect of chemical treatments and filtration, this report was done in partnership with the University of Glasgow, well worth a read, especially on the section about Chlorine, and Iodine types of treatments, and their effectiveness.
Boiling does not remove chemical or heavy metal contamination, in fact to can lead to increase concentrations.
