Hi.
Just finished a new knife. The blade is a common Mora blade (no markings) treated with vinegar. Handle is birch, leather and antler. It is stained with leather dye (mahogny).
The blade is fastened with pine pitch glue. The antler on the handle is fastened with a brass pin and hide glue (hope it copes with wet weather).

The sheath is made of chromium tanned leather scraps I had lying around and warm waxed for weather proofing.
The carving is a pattern from the Sutton Hoo find. A belt strap end I think.

That's a true beauty - I've read somewhere that hide glue is stronger than superglue so it should hold unless it gets soaked.
I can't wait to see a big brother for it - a leuku or larger seax:)

First, wow. That is a good looking knife and the sheath is gorgeous, I really like the sheath.:You_Rock_
Second, is there any chance of a close up of the vinegar etching on the blade? This was something I have only just found out about and I'm intrigued. I was thinking about giving it a try but I really wanted to see what the finish looked like, up close.

I logged in tonight to ask that very question and this was the first thread I opened before I put the question forward.

More detail on the sheath would be great, I've got a knife and sheath to do for a friend who's a viking re-enactor and that style and layout of sheath would look really good and suit the period quite well.

Hi Robby.

Here you are. First a pic of the blade.

I used 35 percent vinegar. Soaking a paper towel in it, rolled it around the blade and left it
over night.

And the pattern for the sheath carving. The pattern is from a book called Viking designs.
My carving is not that detailed. But rather based on the pattern. It would be too "messy" to carve all the details.
