I was using the Geograph.org.uk map app on my mobile phone and came across a symbol I have not seen before. I've enlarged it below so you can get a better look.
Purple squares are typically related to Forestry Commission or Woodland Trust and they only seem to appear on or near their land but this symbol is not listed on the OS website.
Does anybody here know what it is or for? Logging operations, UFO landing site, Bushcraft camp?

and here's a screenshot from the app

Slightly off topic but one useful thing I saw on an old map of Carlisle that seems to be missing from the modern ones is the statement "This area is prone to flooding"

Covered much of the flood areas and to my eyes would lessen idiotic building on flood planes if potential buyers saw that comment on the map.

It's not one that I recognise, could they be route markers specific to a particular walk or track....The Viking way for instance has little markers along it's route and on some maps depicting a Viking Helmet (complete with horns just to wind a few people up) to mark the route.

Is it some interactive tag for digital maps? Only guessing as I have not played with some of these new apps

there are three of those symbols in the image posted above, coincidentally two of those symbols are in almost the same spot where the forestry commission land symbol is shown instead on other os maps (bing maps). It looks like the image posted is the 50,000 scale, this link explains that some symbols have or are changing (perhaps this is one of them as it's where FCL symbols are on other maps) scroll down to bottom of page for info.

I've never seen this symbol before, I have just checked on the OS Website and can't find this symbol anywhere, Could be something to do with the Forestry Commission or even something to do with Geocaching?
