Neck lanyards for knives and other gear is a convenient option. The cordage of choice is usually paracord. This gives us a convenient bit for emergencies. It does have the disadvantage of potentially garroting the user :shock: . I have been using Lampwicking as used in oil lamps. This makes a very comfortable lanyard and can be sewn with a breakaway. the stuff is also superb emergency tinder. My source is www.sirmailorder.ca/ You may have to email to get a current quote. It is sold in very generous rolls. This is the stuff used in traditional snowshoe bindings and is usefull for many projects.

Could the "garroting" problem be got around by looping the cord under the arm and over the opposite shoulder?

It should work fine. The traditional neck carry puts a small knife right in front of you at all times. I once had a wreck with a mule on a packtrip into the California Sierra Nevada range. This was an older, very savvy mount. We wound up halfway down a decomposing granite slide area with my right lower torso and leg pinned under my partner, the saddle and rigging an utter mess. My belt knife naturally was underneath also! So he's lying there listening to my worried "Whoa Jack,Whoa" and telling my party not to chance another wreck helping us. I remembered my small puukko concealed beneath my silk bandanna. Within minutes the tangled mess was cut free and he gained his feet. I grabbed on and he got us back up to the trail proper. I am a strong believer in two knives. Not so much for different tasks, though that is a plus, but for just such a contingency.
The lanyard that has become standard on "tactical" neck knives sold in the US etc is to use a length of metal "ball" chain - the sort of thing used to keep a plug with it's sink. These are quite durable but snap at about 30lbs so no risk of being strangled. To make it more comfortable, strip the inner from a length of paracord and thread the chain inside the sheath of the paracord.
