Drugs.com - Drug Information Online has a section on Natural Products which is quite
detailed and may be of use and interest. It's aimed at healthcare professionals so
assumes a bit of med knowledge, but nothing that can't be cross-checked on Wikipedia
MedFacts Natural Products
http://www.drugs.com/npp/
You can search for a natural product in the dialogue box, or scroll down and browse
through an alphabetical list.
For example O for Oats - Ostrich Fern brings up Oats, Octacosanol, Oleander, Olive Leaf,
Olive Oil, Onion, Oregano and Ostrich Fern each having its own fully referenced monograph.
Here are examples of 'when oats go bad' ;-)
Oats
http://www.drugs.com/npp/oats.html
Oats Interactions
Oat bran may decrease absorption of medications. Advise patients not to take lovastatin
and oat bran together. If both must be taken, advise patients to separate the ingestion of
oat bran and lovastatin by as much time as possible.
Oats Adverse Reactions
Oat bran increases the bulk of stools and frequency of defecation, resulting in distention,
flatulence, and possible perineal irritation. Ingestion of oats may precipitate the symptoms
of celiac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis in sensitive individuals.
Here are a few monographs for plants that I associate with bushcraft-y activities.
Elder(berry)
http://www.drugs.com/npp/elderberry.html
Hawthorn
http://www.drugs.com/npp/hawthorn.html
Soapwort
http://www.drugs.com/npp/soapwort.html
I am still expecting there to be a catch with this site - there are a couple of iffy adverts,
but it seems to be mostly above board (the rest of the site) from what I can tell.
Jo
EDIT - I meant to add that in addition to being fully referenced it also includes any known
interactions with other medications, as well as any toxicity or other problems with the natural
product itself.
