I got 125 metres of natural jute twine from a 99p store a while go, just to use as general cheap cordage for stuff not needing the strength of paracord. And it was 99p:) And you can plait it to make it stronger. And it was 99p....

Makes good wicks too. Anyway, was playing idly with an offcut, and started shredding it. And - voila - the best tinder material on the planet! Fluffs up like a really fluffy thing, and catches a spark brilliantly. You can keep your charcloth and tinder bundles - this stuff is the bees knees.

I'm sure I'm the only person on BCUK who didn't realise this, but I do now!

Jute nests are pretty much the only things I light when using "traditional" methods. I'll light a bit of charcloth with the flint, piston or burning glass and the place it in a jute nest. Unbraiding bits of string to create the nest is very therapeutic. I have also used Sisal with some success but truthfully it is not as good. Today I was having a go with some Kapok, but it is too flamable. It lights easily with Swedish firesteel, but with anything involving blowing on a coal it just smoulders away to nothing before you can get it to light.

I think the only other thing I have lit from a coal was a nest made of fine birch bark shavings.

What are you guys using?

I struggled,

Got glowing but no flame :(

Instead of just ruffin it up on floor, this time used the knife, swmbo took over....

When I find my flint I will try it with flint and knife?

Possibly? Was a quid ball from bm. We've some all natural somewhere and is more fibrous. Alas, we can only play the hand we're dealt ;)

How much did it cost ??? I wasn't paying attention (again). I will have to get some to try.

Attached is a photo of the jute ball I carry around in my tinderbox. I made it by unbraiding natural jute string.

I've never had any problems getting it to light either with flint and steel or with Swedish firesteel. I've never had much success with bowdrills in general, but one of the only 3 times I managed to get flame was by placing the coal in a jute bundle like the above.

I had a rummage in my Youtube account and found a video of me lighting a Jute Bundle.

Keep an eye out for budgie/bird bedding (seriously!) in pet shops... Its just a big ball of non corded jute :)

I picked up three fist size packets for £1 in a store sale.

I have a device for automatically shredding fibres for me; my cat!

Seriously, the scratching post she uses was looking like a wooly mammoth, so I cut off all the string and replaced it with new. In the meantime my tinder kit is now replete.

I got a few metres of old rope from the local theatre, it was old and overstretched so being chucked, weve used it for various projects, but one ofthe main ones is cutting a short (4") section now and then to have in the flint and steel pouch for unravelling. It smells like its been tarred? certainly works well...

Yes jute burns well. I got some jute rope (8mm or 10mm) 30 meter long from my local hardwere store for just over £3. Easy to pull apart plus you can soak it in saltpeter or dip it in wax for a few secs. Good stuff

Always got some Jute in my tinder box, always found easy to catch a spark no problem....

Along with many other types of tinder/fire lighting items... I like a selection and verity.... ;)

One place to get it from is one of the old £1 shopping bags from Tesco's and the like.....

Yep, jute twine is great for making fire. Always a part of my fire kits: tease it apart and it takes a spark very well. Even the cheap green stuff.

I've got to check out the cats' scratching post now.
