Name That Tree

I distinctly remeber when in Scouts making a woggle from a branch, the branch had a very soft centre that was pushed out and then the insides carved to make the woggle.

My question is, what type of wood is it?

Sounds to me like that was elder,it has a soft centre that is easily removed
