Name That Flower

Anyone know what this is?
Seen on the North Downs - so chalky soil.
It was about the same size as a daffodil.
I've looked in a couple of guides, and on the interwebatron, but can't find it. I'm sure it's a common flower, but I'm damned if I can find what it is...

Heh, we’ve had a small clump of those come up in the garden. Perhaps I won’t check the scent after all

It's not too bad. If you break off a leaf and sniff it you'll get the smell.
