Did you make all those? I only have three and they just sort of arrived, I didn’t make any of them.

How do you choose which one to take with you?

Yes made by me.

Two on the left made from scratch = chose a suitable tree (fir tree), cut off branches and cut off the bark and let them dry about a year in the cool shed so they would dry slowly without cracking. And after that finished the job. Far left made in 1999 and second from left some years later.

Second from left I carved octagonal (between branch knots) just by using a knife. And used some sort of varnish to colour it.

The two on the right (made this year) are ready bought shafts for rakes (ash). I just blackened the, made the handles and the lower ends.

Sad to say I don´t use them. It´s just a hobby of sorts. If I use walking poles I use my Black Diamons poles.

I have a 1.8m length of rowan that has been twisted by a honeysuckle into a partial corkscrew at one end. I keep meaning to make a staff from it, but it's just slowly hardening off still.

I know friends who deliberately coiled honeysuckle up young hazel rods to make staffs like that though.
