Right, so after persistently trying to locate a suitable underquilt on here, I decided to get my finger out and ruddy well just make one! Huge thanks to MadDave, and DaveBromley. If there was anyone else who gave me advice, cheers!

So my budget was £20, and i pretty much stuck to it:

HiGear Horizon 3 Season Mummy sleeping bag - £14.99
Nylon thread - £1.00
Shock cord - £2.00
Webbing - £2.00 (2 metres)
Look of horror on my face once i'd made the first cut with my Mora - Priceless

Here are the pics (Be gentle; I have the sewing skill of an arthritic goat):

This is the bag. It's fairly bulky, but I'll be compressive it down down. Around 1.2kg. The top, despite being a mummy, is flat because I've sewn the hood inside

If you can make it out, that is the mouth of the bag. I've sewn 13 loops of webbing on using the nylon thread. A cord will go through these and tie, so that this end will cinch and seal the UQ around the hammock

This one is even more difficult to make out, but this is the back of bag. Those threads are where I've sewn the hood down temporarily.

This is the footwell. I've sliced a 9 inch opening into it, through which the hammock will thread. This will soon have a zip put on it so it is resealable.

Just some detail on the footwell stictching. Not too shabby, if I say so myself...

All of this was handstitched in about 2 hours. No machines in sight. There are two more tabs at the corners of the mouth to hook on some shock cord so I can connect it to the hammock lines, but the bottom end, with the hole in the footwell, should stay tight and snug even without a cord. There are tabs though, just in case.

This whole thing is designed to be used as a sleeping bag as well as the UQ. Once I sew on a zip in the footwell, that'll close up, and the hood can be released with a quick snip on the loose thread I tied it down with.

This'll be tested out fully on the Middlewood meet on the 26th, so I'll grab some pics of it then for your viewing pleasure.

This is my first DIY project, so hopefully it doesnt fail me. Constructive criticisms are welcome.

Cheers,

Matt

P.S. Sorry if I posted the images wrong.

That looks great. Better thn mine. I'm going to make a UQ out of a polish sleeping bag I recently picked up. That should work out well. :)

Nice Job, I like the design. I just made a underquilt out of a US poncho liner (still adapting the suspension and untested) and you have inspired me to document it. Well done.
