Well, I went out for a walk, testing out my hammock, & fishing today with my nephew. I used my homemade alcohol stove & potstand, but the potstand did not hold up under pressure. So, I made three stakes out of deadfall pine branches. This thing is SHARP. Like, sharper than alot of knives out there! I was very impressed. I then proceeded to whittle a few other things with it. I was amazed at what can be done with this simple thing! (I have the wildlife hatchet model). I know most of you here use them alot, but, here, there really isnt a need to carry one when out & about. But, after my experience with it today, its DEFINITELY staying in the daypack permanently!

They really are great axes huh? I venture to suggest possibly the fourth best axes currently made - and th best of the "factory / hand forged" ones

I have a gransfors mini hatchet regarded by some as a bit of a 'toy axe' however I find it invaluable for hewing hearth boards, rough cutting spoon templates and regularly use it for gutting and skinning due to its incredible edge. It is small enough to belt carry so you don't really notice it's there - I love it! :D

Ah, there's nothing like that first Gransfors moment... They really are sharp, aren't they? ;)

I think he'll list Lee Reeves and Ceggas work as superior (though at a higher price), I'm curious as to the third though.

I'm sorry, I missed the question,

Of course yes, Lee Reeves is one of the top 3 (cue top of the pops music)

An example of Lee's work I'm lucky enough to own

As Snufkin so acutely observes so is Cegga. The fairly prosaic example I designed and he made is shown below (and actually the same price as a GB - far less when you think it includes postage from Sweden ;) )

But lets not forget what he is capable of.....

There may well be others as good - but these are my top three.
It saddens me that true custom axe smiths are a rare breed these days

I think these guys are keeping the flame alight though :)

There is no price list mate sorry - those are previous commissions (not mine sadly - I do have a hand forged knife blade from Goran that the incomporable Magnus handled and sheathed for me). I did talk to Goran at one point through Magnus about his work (Goran doesn't speak English). IIRC you would be into several hundred to about a grand depending on size.

Worth it though

However, one day, I think Cegga will make mine

Still saving........
