Mutant hazels

On the left a standard hazelnut from a tree at one end of our village, on the right one from the other end.

now thats a man sized hazelnut, a couple of those inside you and your ready to take on a wild boar with a toothpick and a jar of apple sauce!!!

The bigger one could be from a turkish hazel tree.

Yup, after a quick look in my tree book, turkish hazel seems to fit the bill nicely.
EDIT

Now further investigation reveals turkish hazel usually has smaller nuts. So I think we've got a filbert here.
