Yay! The caterpillar of Elephant Hawk Moth, so named because of the pointed extendable 'nose' at the front of the caterpillar. If disturbed they can rear up and wave the head side to side, when tose spots look like eyes. I get reports every year of people claiming to have found threatening snakes, and it is always one of these.

Since it is wandering it is ready to pupate so put it somewhere sheltered and it will turn into a beautiful lime green and pink moth.

It was making its way across the path towards a stream so just helped it speed up its trip.
