I've no idea how to do the "stitch groove" without a "stitch groove tool "

as for spacing, I prefer the bigger spacing of 5 or 6mm ( with the smaller spacings, I'm always afraid that the leather will tear like the perforations on a tea bag ) to get a consistent gap, use a dinner fork :) they are normally about 5 ish mm apart, just press it into the leather and you have your stitch marks :)

I used a small U gouge for wood carving for my first pieces. A steady hand and consistent pressure got reasonable results.

Recently got a stitch groover from ebay, they are available for 6 or 7 quid.

Use a fork with the the tines bent so one pressed in does a groove and the other acts as the spacer.

It won't remove leather like a real stitch groover does but it does work if you're starting out :)

All done. Not perfect, but perfectly functional. Really pleased

Learned loads - now want to do another.

It doesn't show in the photo, but the stitching is a bit recessed - used a flat-bladed screwdriver to make a "trough".

very tidy work for your first go keep it u

From someone with your leather skills Hamish that means a great deal. Thanks.

If that is your first attempt, blimey, I'd be pleased as punch if my first attempt at stitching came out that good! We should be able to compare later this week, still waiting for stuff to be delivered.
