Freezing cold, high winds, a few hours between chores, what better way to get lunch than with my boy making steak and smores in the woods......

While I got a tarp up, he gathered bundles of birch branches for the fire. We rigged up a small wind break behind the fire to protect it. Nothing fancy, just effective.

With the kettle on the flames for hot chocolate, I seasoned the steak and got on some coals at the edge of the fire. A few minutes each side, followed a few minutes resting and the first course was ready....

We prepared the smores. I laid out the chocolate digestives on tin foil, and he put two marshmallows on each biscuit. I wrapped them in the foil and got them on the coals to melt just right.

With the kettle boiling, I poured a huge mug of hot chocolate for us to share. Sat under the tarp, we whiled away a few hours chatting. Football, fortnite, school friends.....

Once done, we packed everything away, cleared the fire site and after a final check of things, we headed back home. Simple.

Wonderful, absolutely right!
Reminds me of sitting by a fire showing my son how to whittle a stick. Not making anything, just whistling and thinking.
