makes sense since alcohol reacts to cause the aluminium to corrode - must be some of the aluminium is dissolved in the alcohol and produces a deposit after the alcohol is burned off

MSR bottles are galv. steel but same principle as above. Methanol is weakly acidic and therefore reacts with metals. When used industrially is is considered quite corrosive and special consideration to the materials used are required. It should only be stored in plastic containers for long periods. The other option is your methanol was contaminated with wax?

Looking at it it could well be the bottles interior coating has come away. I only use Trangia bottles with safe pourer to carry meths/methanol.
