Hi all,

My uncle has asked me to spend a couple of weeks making the woods and some field area fit for pheasants so he can run a shoot.

What I want to know is what is the best type of land for them, presumably they need very heavy brush cleared but I can't be sure!

Any help would be greatley appreciated!

Pheasant are a woodland edge bird so large dense woods are only any good around the edges.
Cutting a wide ride through the wood creates 2 more edges
Ground cover is what's needed. Go to the wood in winter, lay down and see how far you can see at ground level. That will give you an odea of the holding capacity of the ground and what you need to do to improve it.
If you were a pheasant would you stay in a cold drafty wood?
Create some nice warm cover with food and water near by and you should be fine
Keep the predators down too to stop them eating all your hard work!

I help my dad run a small pheasant shoot, its great fun and very satisfying and rewarding when you see the birds grow and have a good days shoot at the end of it.
All I can do is echoe the comments above - let us know how the shoot days go!!

Also remember to give the birds "interest". Spin the feed out rather than dump it, give them some hay bales to scratch at etc. They do love "rides" as Mark says but also glades and open space. If you clear a nice " glade" for them, it makes a lovely campsite ;)
