Hi forrestdweller,
Take a look at this, http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57985&highlight=shakuhachi there is a good pdf link in one of the posts. Also do a search for pvc Shakuhachi, loads of good stuff on youtube, they are tricky to play but easy and cheap to make and they sound amazing. I made this http://www.fides.dti.ne.jp/~sogawa/englishpagepvc.html pvc one in my lunch hour and it's great to learn on. I'm in the process of buying some good bamboo to make a proper one, it's quite expensive though.
Have fun.

that looks simple enough even for me- just a piece of bamboo with 4holes drilled/burned in and one end a bit shaped as a mouthpiece/blowing edge... . will give it a try!
