Hello!

I have found that when I visit Canada book stores that there is a better selection of outdoors books from the UK. I would appreciate it if you could please give me some titles and/or authors to look for when we go back up on May 13. I recently purchased Ray Mears' "Bushcraft" and thoroughly enjoyed it! :)

Thank you!

It's from the UK so I doubt you'd even find it but I really wouldn't recomend "Chris Ryan's Ultimate Survival Guide". Former SAS soldier but there is little new information, it's much less helpful than say Essential Bushcraft - a condensed version of Bushcraft by Ray Meares - and I find the style all very gun-ho.

I bought it in a WHS sale for £3.99 and I'm not sure it represents value at that price. Just one to avoid. Apart from that I have little to offer in the way of help. I've never been to canada let alone one of their bookshops!

Might be worth asking a mod to move this to the resources section, not read it myself but have heard Mors Kockanski's (sp?) Northern Bushcraft is a good book.

Hello Plainsman,

I haven’t read many books written in the UK about bushcraft, other than those by Ray Mears, whom I greatly admire and respect.

I can however recommend books about bushcraft cooking by a British author known as Johnny Jumbalaya. The two titles I have by him are: “The Essential Hedgerow and Wayside Cookbook” (ISBN 0 9544158 2 5) and, “The Essential Backpacker’s Wild Food Cookbook” (ISBN 0 9544158 3 3) you can find them, and others, online at: http://www.countrylovers.co.uk/wildfoodjj/index.htm

I would like to second twelebore’s recommendation of Mors Kockanski's “Bushcraft” (Lone Pine Publishing). This is a reprint of the book ‘Northern Bushcraft’ that was first published in 1987. This book deals with survival in forest environments in the northern attitudes. A very good read, Available at:

and

I also found some very nice booklets by Mors Kockanski at:

Best regards,
Paul.

From the date you gave I guess you are only intersted in summer bushcraft books.
But in case you need very good winter bushcraft books I have some titles for you.
Please PM me if you need some winter bushcraft books tips too.

cheers

Ok guys,

here are the books I consider very good for the winter bushcrafter:

The Winter Wilderness Companion: Traditional and Native American Skills for the Undiscovered Season
Garrett Conover, Alexadra Conover

and

Winter Wise: Travel and Survival in Ice and Snow
Montague Alford

If one of you can read swedish then there are too the books:

Överleva vintertid på naturens villkor
from Lars Fält and Stefan Källman

A book I warmly recomment is a book specialised only on the subject "Fire"
the authour wrote 408 pages on the art of firemaking. That book is truely amazing but only in swedish.

called "Eld" by Yngve Ryd

Cheers
Abbe

Plainsman,

The SAS Survival guide is a classic (not bearly as military as it sounds)
Richard Mabeys Food for Free is also very good

For a fantastic book on living in a low impact manner try

The New Complete Guide to Self Sufficiency by John Seymour
