It's another Wednesday afternoon thing which means I might not be able to sneak off from
work but details are:

Life on the edge: the last hunter-gatherers in Britain
A gallery talk by Jill Cook
Wednesday 1 August 2007, 13.15
Room 51
BRITISH MUSEUM, Great Russell Street near Russell Square.
Admission free, just drop in

Jill Cook was in Ray Mears' Aboriginal Britain episode - she's a curator at the British
Museum and looks after the paleolithic and mesolithic collection. Below is a map
showing where the Brit Mus is, and also mentions another talk she's giving a couple
of weeks later (on the last ice age):

(The PDF that you can download from that site is for Sep 06 to Jul 07 but hopefully
when their new brochure comes out, that's where it will be).

Cracking information from you as always, Jo, thanks.

By the way, I saw Jill Cook on the TV the other day, and apparently the BM have now decided to allow members of the public to handle some of the genuine stone tools and artefacts. A pretty amazing opportunity, I thought.

Best regards,
Paul.

I wonder if the British Museum webcast (broadcast via web) their talks in the same
way that the Natural History Museum does for their lunchtime "Nature Live" talks
and events - that way others not in the vicinity can watch it either at the same time
or later. Perhaps I'll ask!

Will the public be wearing gloves before handling the artefacts? Sounds like a lovely
idea but...

What programme was Jill Cook on?

I'm scrambling for those web casts any moment now. And the public don't apparently have to wear gloves, the BM have decided to allow some risk of harm to the artefacts in favour of the pleasure factor of handling the 'real deal', so to speak.

Best regards,
Paul.

EDIT: Can't remember the programme specifics, but there is/was a 'behind the scenes' type series on about the BM in recent weeks.
EDIT No2: The programme in question may have been on BBC1s 'sign zone'/insomniacs early morning slot. If truth be told, I can't remember exactly, life can get a bit blurry for me at times :)
