Lifesaver bottle

I've been looking around for a good water filtration system for a while and from all the ones I've looked at, the best seems to be the Lifesaver bottle. Has anyone on here had experience with them? They're quite expensive, even though it works out cheap in the long run, so I'm curious as to what people think about the product.

I also noticed that there are some which are really cheap on eBay. I usually follow the saying that if something is too good to be true, it usually is. I wouldn't want to buy a knock off "Lifesaver" bottle because I doubt it'd do what it says on the tin! Has anyone on here had bought one of the £40-£50 ones off eBay and if so, was it a real product?

Thanks very much!

Bought one 3 years ago (the 4000UF) and very satisfied. The only thing that doesn't filtrates is salty water. The manufacturer does state it can filtrate urine water, but salts remain.

Except for the bulkiness of the bottle, another thing I want to point out is the limited life of the Activated Carbon Filter. Yes, you can use the Bottle without it, but you clearly sense a different taste.

Thus, if you're thinking buying one, go for this package.

The only cheap and proven alternative is the Lifestraw, but doesn't filter that much

Lifesaver like to make you think they have the only full proof system and im sure they work great but they are not the only bomb proof systems. check out the 'thirst aid bag' for a very packable lightweight solution or if you want a bottle based type have a look at drinksafe systems explorer canteen.

I've got the Drink-Safe explorer canteen here http://www.drinksafe-systems.co.uk/products.php (got down 3/4) and I'm not impressed with it at all, or maybe it works fine but I'm expecting too much from it? Either way it does not filter bad taste from water, or salt, so you get the impression that you are drinking filthy water by the taste, is this even safe!?!

Check out the Sawyer systems - these are incredibly popular with our US colleagues at the moment. THe reviews and camping websites seem very positive, and their design - utilising thousands of small tubes - seems very innovative. Most are 0.1 Micron - at least on a par with the competition.

They also do a .02 micron filter for when you want to clear viruses as well - http://www.sawyer.com/sawyersaves/products-pointtwo.html

Outdoor warehouse sell them in the UK http://www.outdoorwarehouse.co.uk/i...egory&bid=9BBDD9E1-9575-DB60-32EDC1DE665E7F2E

I have never had a non rop filter that took the taste away, peaty is peaty, but I haven't had any adverse affects while drinking any water I have gained through using drinksafe or msr or any of the other filters I have used. You need a specific type of filter to remove salt, reverse osmosis pump.

Just bought one on eBay for £30. Sent safe, sound and unused. Everything sealed as needed. They are very highly recommended, although, as someone else has said the carbon filter won't last the 4000 litres of the main filter so you will buy more of them in the long run.
I will be getting more for the family so make sure you bid on different ones than me;-)

I have a LifeStraw what is mentioned earlier on. It does the job, but one of its cons is that you can't fill up any water canteen. Have to figure it out how to improve it so it would be possible.

I use a Millbank bag and boil. Also sometimes tabs.

I have thought about the Lifestraw but purely for emergency hydration in which case you are either drinking from source or fill a bottle and use the straw to drink.
However what about using a large volume syringe to force the water through the straw into container-would that work? If it would it much enhances the useability
