I'd like to have a go at making a leather sheath for a knife. Could somebody give me some advice on where to get and what is the best type of leather and twine to use.

hi mate, for the leather you could try leprevo, the identity store, tandy leather, and ebay maybe, as you are just starting out maybe some scrap leather from ebay.
as you want to make a sheath you want 3.5 to 4 mill leather, veg tan, you could use chromium tan, but veg tan is best. actually to be honest you could even use any type of leather to practice.
you can get all your tools from any of these outlets.
hope that helps a little bud.
take care.

I made my first leather sheath recently. Also got the leather and the 18/3 linen thread from Jean Turner.
An adjustable stitch groover and some F02 B/B press studs, with a T13 Fitter/Fixer for the studs from Le Prevo, and the dye. And the sharp knife, ruler etc, I already had.
Make good paper stencils of everything first.

If you have a power drill, then I would recommend getting yourself a pillar drill converter as it is very difficult to get the stitching 'straight' all the way through 12mm of leather welt!
These will do the job and wont break the bank:

Here are a few links I studied prior to having a bash:

I decide to forgo a firesteel holder, as the firesteel never fits after a while.
And a press stud, as I fancied a change, its practical and I like the SWC sheaths: http://swc-handmade-knives.co.uk/SWC_handmade_Knives/CUSTOM_KNIFE_GALLERY.html#13

Good Luck!

Turned out well enough for me. And its all I'll ever need.
