leather question

I am considering using strips of leather to make a woven chair seat, as I described on the chair thread.
What I would like to ask please, can anyone offer advice on what leather to get that would be suitable, thickness, full grian, kipp, veg tan etc I dont understand the terminology. I will be cutting it into strips of various widths, obviously it shouldnt stretch too much, but I dont want it to be over thick like a heavy belt leather, rather softer like you get on sofa's?
Any sudgestions?
