There are situations where a lanyard is usefull. Then again, oftentimes they are a hazard. If you have a good, secure sheath, lanyards are simply a ready made snare for some branch to catch your knife. Use a lanyard while engaged in tasks where losing it or slipping can reduce loss or injury. Taking a few moments to secure safe footing BEFORE starting any cutting task will reduce potentially devastating injuries. If you feel dropping a knife is dangerous, loop that lanyard and then deliberately release the blade. Some knives will swing with enough momentum to still inflict a wound. I think most makers drill lanyard holes to facilitate mass production. It makes for a convenient peg hole on the assembly line
