Leather belts and pouches

Just managed to finish a pair of matching belts and pouches as Christmas presents for my walking buddies. (Mind you, a bit of edge burnishing may not go amiss.) I have still to engrave the black belt. I wanted to try engraving after dyeing - just to see what the result is like.

I have to go back to work tomorrow after three weeks off - not looking forward to it, but at least my time off has been productive.

Wow, a couple of questions.

1. What thickness leather did you use for the pouches?
2. How the hell did you get the embossed celtic pattern so flippin' neat?!

I'm a complete newbie to leather work, so any advice is appreciated.

1. I used 2.8 - 3.2 mm leather for the pouches (as described by the man from Le Prevo) The belt leather I bought as cut straps from Bowstocks.

2. I cheated! I am a Design and Technology teacher with access to a laser engraver. I designed the celtic patterns on Corel Draw and engraved them on the leather prior to cutting and dyeing. I posted some other examples of this here:

Ahh, I admire your honesty! And yes that other work is fabulous. Sadly it'll be a scalpel and burnisher for me, I can't see the joint account stretching to cover a laser engraver!

I does look superb though, what a fun tool to have access to!
