I do exactly the same as Simon M, but rather than a rigdeline, I have a DD net Hammock that I string up nice and taught to act as a kit shelf. I set it at arms length above my hammock so that I can sit up and reach into it for things at night if need be. The bonus of it being string is that you can see everything, plus you can hang torches from it too.

I really should build a shelf like that for my terrano. Marine plywood and studs...
