Thought I would share the finished product. 410 surgical blade with a full tang construction, handle is Ash with an oiled finish using teak oil to give it some water resistance. It will be given a final buff and polish before it gets boxed but sharpened to 18° to give a more durable meat and skin cutting edge. The temtation to do a few pigeons with it is there but I shall resist!

Cheers Rob. Still deciding on a lanyard hole in that handle. The tang is already drilled and I have an accurate template but personally I think it might spoil the clean look of the straight grain

Never noticed but aye it isn't far away is it! Ample supply of straight grained scale material of I take a circular to the table top

Take it from the whole underside you'll be sweet, she'll never notice that the bench is only 5mm thick

Aye finding a coaster is instinctive now. I find its best not to risk it!

Thanks man. Had a hairy moment thicknessing the ash, I don't have a planer thicknesser so had to cut the block on a scroll saw and the blade likes to follow growth rings in hard wood! Think it turned out ok though. And it's provisionally got a home
