I took my son camping in the Brecon Beacons last week at one of the summits, his highest and first summit camp. Visibility was good on the way up but hill fog came in as the sun began to set and remained throughout the night and following morning. Wind was just a light breeze with a few gusts throughout the night but nothing too exciting. We headed over to Pen Y Fan for breakfast and got a show from the beautiful Ravens, probably my favourite birds. To watch them swooping in an and out of visibility through the fog, and hearing them caw created the most amazing atmosphere, like something out of a thriller movie.

I also got to test out the new Aiguille Alpine Equipment backpack which is an absolutely totally awesome pack and possibly my new favourite pack for carrying heavier loads. Pack weight was somewhere around 16/17kg. I really do like this backpack. I did manage to melt about a 20mm hole through the edge of the waist strap making hot chocolate which I got really pee'd off about but I've gotten over it now and reinforced the area tonight by sewing a piece of webbing over the top. Luckily it's near the padding so won't interfere with the buckle.

Brilliant outing :) something the kid will remember too
and a neat job on the repair as well :approve:

Here's to many more such jaunts.....maybe put up a map, print out a wee photo and put it on the map for your son to see where he's gotton to around the country ?

Thank you.

Yes that is such a good idea. I keep meaning to get a scrap book and print off photos from our camps. I'm definitely going to do the map idea, too!

Thanks for posting that; a great trip for both of you I'm sure :)

My son was about eight when I first took him up the Beacons - I had to tie a climbing rope onto him because the wind was so bad; I could have flown him like a kite if he'd stuck his arms out. There was no way we could have camped on top but he thought it was great fun.

Yeah, that sounds great fun. My son has been walking in the Brecon Beacons in some heavy wind, not quite to the point where a rope thether was needed, but he did find it hilarious being blown around a bit.
