Had anyone got one of these blades, or indeed anything else from Lappi? I found this one on Attleborough Accessories and it comes with a matching firesteel. What do you think to it? This would be my first knife buy for bushcraft (slow ain't I lol) and I'd like some advice on it from people that have used the make before if possible.

Thanks
Grim

Never owned one but have used one and they are of a very good quality for the price,

However it would appear that you are spending £19 for a fire steel and a chunk of the blade missing (Not needed, the back of a normal blade will do the same job), as the LAPPI TALJKNIV seems to be the same knife

also it does not mention weather the sheath has a fire steel holder?

Saying that the LAPPI ALGSPAR looks a much more robust knife

Just some thoughts

Just goes to show why I wanted others opinions :) I'll have a look at the others on there too. I liked the idea of a matched set but have to admit it's expensive.

Also worth remembering if you use fire steels as quick as I do, the matching one wont last long!

I think I agree with what others have posted. That indent gives me pause. It only weakens the blade imo, and it's totally unnecessary. A good sharp spine (sharp edges) should do the trick. No need for a special spot like that one.

I agree with everyone! (Can you feel the love in this thread?) :D No first hand experience of these, but the Algspar looks really good to me. It seems like you're paying over the odds for a firesteel, and as pignut says, once you've worn out your nice matching firesteel, you'll have to use a standard one anyway.

Get a little block of curly birch from Denis at Brisa or see if anyone has a spare bit and "pimp" your own fire steel.

Hi Grimnir,

Sorry I've just noticed this thread. Yes I've bought the very knife you're talking about also from Attleborough Accesories. I got the one with the fire steel too and frankly if I were you I wouldn't bother getting the firesteel. It's a scout model in a birch and antler handle and is small. The recess in the knife for striking the firesteel is pretty rubbish too, and also not great sparks from the knife spine. That's the bad points but I have to say I love the knife itself it's blade is just the right size for my liking it sharpens razor sharp is comfortable and easy to handle. It's a great knife for the money but I wouldn't bother with the firesteel model if I were you. If you want a nice knife and can spend more money a fallkniven nl5 idun is a nice knife and is a a heavy duty bushcrafting knife. sharpens very well is very robust for hard work and throws sparks from a firesteel like a roman candle  It's got a convex blade and the edge lasts a good long time too have a look here 2nd from bottom http://www.countrytrader.co.uk/acatalog/Fallkniven_Northern_Lights_Series.html or if you're really flush at the moment there's the one at the bottom for £761:00
Outdoorcode's your man for this one if you fancy one. Hope that helps

Hi Bis
i have three knives from tregor, the HM Leuku with the 5.5 inch blade - very good knife, my favorite and the one i have found to me the most all round usefull. i also have the j line lapp puukko which is excelent but i was always a little windy about the handle tapering towards the blade, should be no problem unless you want to stabb something which misses the point but it felt a little insecure in my hand, (suppose i could use one of the tutorials on here and change the handle :)) and a no name 3 inch carbon blade they did a few years agon that came with a red handle and a martini plastic sheath. this is the rough backup knife and the one i use for budding and general hacking.
i have always found the company good and very quick, i have baught a few things from them including brass vesta case with compas. no connection etc just happy.

The knives look great but I can't find an English translation :) so I've no idea what they are lol. Typical Brit I'm afraid, haven't got a second language. I'm attempting to learn Old Norse but that's not a great help in this situation.
