Would it be possible to design a custom knife sheath so it serves a secondary purpose as a netting shuttle (or netting needle)?
Kydex or plastic I reckon should be suitable for the construction but would love to hear what the resident leather workers think.

I appreciate there's no substitute for the skill of being able to whittle one but carrying gear that performs more than one function is also desirable.
Besides, in order to carve one quickly you need to be carrying a knife and as that's probably in a sheath...

Now, there's a query that, at first read, piqued my interest.....

But the more I thought about it, the stranger it became!

A side pouch on a sheath to carry a netting needle or a means of securing one to a sheath - I can understand - almost! Though it would not allow any cord to be carried on the needle which would make the needle very bulky.

IF you did carry the cord already loaded onto a needle, that formed part of a sheath (or even strapped to the side of a sheath) it would be open to abrasion, burrs, thorns, dirt and weather - which are not the most desirable when making your eventual net.

Thinking about needle size (and the size of the corresponding Netting Gauge), something that approximates the width of a plastic Mora sheath might be useful, but if it got any bigger (towards the size of a few of my custom leather sheaths) with a correspondingly sized gauge - would mean a net that is better suited to North Sea Fishing.

Then I come to the point that I might have the potential to deploy a netting needle at speed, but then need to settle down, load the needle with cord and then concentrate on making the net which might take some considerable time!

I am genuinely interested in seeing how this pans out and the reasons behind it as I'm sure there are concepts that I have not grasped yet.

Good luck

I can't see it being much use. A netting needle should be slim and smooth to pass through loops easily and I can't see how that could be accomplished in a useable sheath. Also, if you somehow managed to accomplish this, where do you safely atore your knife while netting?

How often do you need to use a netting needle? The weught of a plastic netting needle is next to nothing and as said, you can carry it loaded and ready to go.
you can also make a good needle from some heavy wire, if that nakes the multi-use idea more appealing :)
