kent pattern axe head

hi everyone, I've just bought a kent pattern axe head for the princely sum of one english pound, unfortunately it has no handle so i have to make one, when I have been giving it the once over I've noticed the eye is tapered, so my question is.....( sorry if its a stupid question ) which way round would i put the handle on, wide to narrow or narrow to wide? every other axe i own hasn't got a tapered eye and it just threw me. my brain is saying narrow to wide as this would create a wedge shape and the other way i feel would make it very likely to slide off during use. just hoping someone knows the right way so i can get it right

Narrow to wide so the handle has something to expand into when you fit the wedge.
