Teedee’s Fad thread got me thinking about kit that at first glance might SEEM a bit faddy, but actually turns out to be great.

Some kit that is popular with good reason and if you lost it, you’d replace it with the same thing again immediately.

Here are some of mine:

- Fjallraven Vidda Pro trousers
- Laplander
- Mora Companion HD
- Lowa Renegade boots (just replaced a pair myself)
- DD Superlight tarp
- Folding twig stove
- Keela Ventile Heritage smock (I am deeply in love with this)
- Telescopic pocket bellows

What examples have you got?

8R stove
Trangia Kettle
Fire steal
Helle Eagan (I have a lot of knives, I always come back to this one)
Stanley hip flask
Petzl Tikka
Yorkshire tea bags
Sea to summit collapsible cup.
A small Stanley flask (You need fresh milk.)

That's enough, a good brew is what it's all about, really.

That's an interesting thought Chris, and got me thinking about my gear. I have items that I have had for years that I have replaced with new faddy kit but then good back to the original, my trail hawk being one such thing.

I guess the faddy item of today is the standard of tomorrow and if it works for you, and you go back to it time after time, then it's a good piece of kit not just a passing fad to drain the wallet or keep up with the Jones'.

- DD Magic Carpet XL
- TBS and billy can cup and water bottle
- 550 Paracord
- Victorinox Soldiers Knife 08
- Silky Outback Edition saws
- Fallkniven F1 (maybe I might try the R2 Scout if I ever lost the F1)

OEX bushcraft tarp, (bit smaller and more tieout points than a DD 3x3)
foam sleeping mat
Thermarest old skool thin air mattress
Whisperlite stove
Hexy stove
ally water bottle and sweetcorn tin/carpet tape cup that fits onto it.
2mx 1.25/1,5m bit of thick cut tarp or similar as a ground protection footprint

Telescopic pockets bellows ?? That's called a broken off car ariel where I come from!.

What is this thing called a Swanndri shirt, I am into Pendletons myself :)
OK, apologies that I'm late to the party.

I love my Pendletons; they're my go to and I probably own more than I should (my wife would say there's no probably about it).

That said, I picked up a Swanndri bush short for a steal recently and have to say it's bloody brilliant.

A sleeveless Barbour jacket, a 600gsm green Woolpower full zip sweater, a pair of Red Wing 6" Mocc boots, all bought in fits of deluded fancy. When they arrived I immediately thought 'these are headed right back to eBay'.

Still got them, still wearing them.

This supports a concept I've been semi-following for a while, where I'll keep an eye out for a spare / second-hand of some item that has proven itself to be of good value, so I can try to snag a bargain to stockpile something I know to be a high performer.

I've done this on a couple of items, and it allows me to store something for when my original breaks / wears out. Nothing super expensive, and I know products get discontinued / superseded, but I'm not always convinced on the replacement and have been gutted in the past to realise I can't get the exact replacement for something I've come to love. I've seen posts on here talking about trying to get cherished products and struggling because the manufacturer has stopped making it.

On the 'seeming' fad idea, I second the Lowa Renegade boots (they are so comfy and just keep going through the worst conditions), and the pocket bellows.
I have a duo of these head torches - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07Y21GMKQ/ref=twister_B0FFM2BMV5?th=1&psc=1 and they're ridiculously good value, light weight and rechargeable.
I also totally love my Goldmanns Crocodile tongs.

Stainless steel Crusader cup
Keela Harris Tweed smock thing
Thorn Wood Forge Kestrel hatchet
Lundhags boots - I can't remember which ones they are

It's surprisingly hard to think of those 'absolutely-must-have' items! Still, there are a few of mine that I would replace in the blink of an eye.

My Bergans Rugged Mountain Pants
And the Laplander... oh my god, Bahco absolutely NAILED it with that one. I have three (one in my bag, one in the car, one in my hut), and several spare blades. That thing is an absolute machine, it will go through anything like butter.
The 'silencer' jet cover for my Primus Omnilite; it turns it from sounding like a rocket taking off to something almost quiet.
My Alice Pack. Seems like an anachronism and a fad with the frame, but it is hands down the best rucksack I've ever had, by a country mile, and I've had all the usual Berghaus ones, Karrimor SF and whatnot. The primary reason the military moved away from the Alice Pack is that they don't fare that great when smashed on the ground in parachute drops, which is not my concern
And my 'Klepper' kayak (a polish copy). It was an impulse purchase and everyone thought it was a bit of a fad at first, but this is now its 13th season and it has probably spent close to a year out there. Defo replacing that one with something similar if that time comes.
