Is a US Bushcraft Offensive?

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I have basically renamed my site Bushcraft USA, and since it was originated in the UK I wanted to get some input if the name was actally offensive to anyone in the UK. I have Bush skills, primitive skills, aboriginal skills, inuit skills but arent they all bushcraft in a sense?

Just curious if you have the time...

Thanks... There's really no affiliation that I am trying to promote here. I put a link to this site on my website butreally since the UK is so far away, I don't perceive it as being offensive, however I wanted to be respectful to the name and it origins. So I will ask Tony, also maybe I should ask RM as well huh...?

I was only saying to ask Tony as a common courtesy. I know you can do it without asking as you dont need anyones permission. No offence ment. :)
Andrew.

Brian, nobody has exclusive use of the word "Bushcraft", it's been about a lot longer than both BCUK and RM. You'd end up asking a lot of people if you wanted to ask everybody that uses the word including most UK bushcraft schools, Mors Kochanski and most of the population of Australia and southern Africa! lol :lmao:

If you want to use it then do so. It is nice and polite that you are going to ask Tony and I'm sure he won't have an issue with it.

All the best,

Bam. :D

Hi Brian,
I've just had a look at your site, first impresions are that its easy to navigate through and that you offer a wide variety of outdoor courses, things seem to look good for you over there, that in itself will have a positive effect on the rest of the public - raising awareness of the natural world etc. Would I be right in assuming that the site is not yet finished.? Getting back to your question about the name - well your site address is still www.indigenousinstitute.com, so there won't be any confusion over that. I also think the administration/patronage of this site is well established and yet may still benefit from the link on your own site.
IMHO I can't see it being a problem, after all - whats in a name.? I may be speaking out of turn, after all this is not my site, but for whats its worth Good Luck..

Shankly.

I'm offended. Bushcraft is ours and you can't have it ;)

I thought Bushcraft in the US was something to do with the presidents....ahhh...politics...best not

Seriously though Brian - like Bam said, it's just a word and I don't think you can copyright them (oh...seems you can...oh well..)

Thanks guys!! I really appreciate it. You know, I have met online a lot of great people here at Bushcraft UK, and out of respect for this site and its members, I wanted to name my site something people an identify with and on a much larger scale, so i went with Bushcraft USA... Oh and Shankly thanks for isiting...No the site is not yet done but working on it as time permits LOL. Marts, I am taking it now...you said I could, and i'm keeping it now :1244:

Brian,

Some technical points:

I surfed to www.indigenousinstitute.com with both Firefox 1.5 and Internet Explorer.

- The opening text in the green box does not look very clear with Firefox.
- The bitmap on the portal page does not show with Firefox

Something you might check. Nice site!

-Emile
