Modern thermal underwear be damned, wasn't that why long johns and union suits were invented in the first place, hardly a new idea is it?

I do keep coming back to the idea of liking four poster beds with drapes.

Getting medieval on d'em..

The Japanese heat room by room which makes alot more sense.
The Old school central europeans still have a propensity for large central Masonary heaters.

I see alot of architectural type plans in my job and the general move to large open plan living , large high vaulted ceilings and large sections of glazing isn't one support.

Yep, try living in an open plan, 370 year old barn, with high ceilings, no internal doors downstairs, and gaps to the outside that reopen as the crucks move as fast as you fill them :)

Luckily, we have a source of wood to feed the 7.5kw log burner! But, we do wear thermals throughout winter:)

And the most important part is you look Pioneer-chic whilst doing it!!

I agree that older buildings have character -but the trade off is running costs and comfort levels.

Clothes on inside? I never wear anything but my briefs when I´m at home. Temperature in my single room apartment is about 21-22C. Well, I have no mats on the floor so it´s a bit cold so I do wear slippers.
Bottom floor of this kind of house, I have no balcony.

Is this district communal heating ?

I pretty much live in my outdoor gear inside and am pretty nice and snug all winter. My heating goes on 1.5 hours in the morning, 2 hours in the evening, this, in the depths of winter, maintains my small terraced house at around 15°C. I wear thermal long johns and long sleeved top, thick fleece and down gilet, often a woolly hat, sometimes even a scarf, and finally, a pair of Carinthia tent booties. In the evening, I always hunker down under a wool blanket. I just don’t like paying money to power companies that are profiteering, especially given their record profits when people were struggling with the cost of living crisis, I’d rather use it for enriching my life.

We keep our old terraced house around 16C throughout the day usually, which is comfortable to me. At night heating stays off and usually have a window open to sleep. It's not unusual for the house to drop to 12C through the night in winter.
