After some rigorous wet weather testing (24hrs :lmao:) over the weekend I must nominate the following items as impressive Kit

Akubra Cattleman hat - kept my head dry for the whole time and prevented my glasses from steaming up wonderfully whilst going about camp chores which is great for a four eyed get like me.

Peter Storm goretex - gaiters only £7 but kept out ALL the water and mud from trousers and boots.

Meindl Lhotse boots - bone dry, enough said.

Gransfor Brooks Small Forest Axe - WOW you read about these and I have used mine many times before for messing about making kindling but this weekend when there was a wet fire to keep going and trees to take care of it really came into its own and made me realise what all the raving is about. 2" and 3" branches loped with one swipe and 8" hardwood done in 5 mins(one handed as my arm is still sore).

Silky Saw - some one else had this and I would love to know the model as it made short work two 12" birch trees and a 10" ash.

Yes; its definitely gaiter weather after the downpour we had
They are a much underestimated piece of kit
It took a couple of different types to find ones that suit my needs best
I have wax cotton ones and they are good for bushcraft as they are a bit more hard wearing although obviously a wee bit more weight
Meindl boots are on my list for the future so nice to hear a good review

Akubras are great , i have 3 .meindle, boots are ace had a pair and how much is that silky saw ?????????????????????

Hey Gill,
How do you clean those hats? I have scrunched mine up through wafting the fire and got it all covered in mud and it stinks.Any tips

The saw jees.............70 dabs I think. A stihl petrol chainsaw is only 150.

Still, a good professional bit of kit that, to late to go on my Christmas list though:D

I know I nearly swallowed my cig when I saw the price :)

still though if it does the job right for you and it's a price your willing to pay then I have no problem with expensive kit.

And I DO want one of those hats.

Silky Zubats are almost as good and around £45

A type without the curve and 300mm long is the Gomtaro which is the best seller and good all round. They also do a folding vertion of this.
The curve in a saw gives more power and better at reaching branches with one hand during one handed pruning and climbing/balancing.

Barney if it is out of shape , just hold it over the kettle or even better an actual food steamer then just reshape it , it,s not as hard as it sounds . this will also help clean it ,brush any mud /marks off. i got an Akubra sombrero ,this is the one the bush tucker man wears ,when new ,it,s not shaped like his you have to do this yourself by steaming it in the manner i said. i was a bit anxious about it at first, but it turned out good.
