I read a great book ages ago about clown in different cultures down the ages. The section on the Hopi Indians was especially good. I still don't like clowns though, they are a bit freaky. Same with scarecrows, dolls, masks. I think it's the almost - but not quite rightness about them that puts us off. Being unable to read their expression correctly. (Seemingly in the canine world black dogs are unpopular with other dogs as it's hard to read their facial and body language.)
